Windows 10:

  • Make sure your microphone or headset is properly connected to your device (if it isn't built in).
  • If your microphone or headset has a mute button, make sure it is not active.
  • Make sure your microphone or headset is set as the system default recording device:
    1. Select the Start button in the bottom left corner, then click on Settings (small gear icon two up from the Start button)
    2. Choose System, then Sound
    3. Scroll down to the Input section and make sure your microphone is selected under the "Choose your input device" drop down
    4. You can then test if it is working by speaking in to the microphone and looking for the feedback bar under the "Test your microphone" section
  • Make sure apps have access to your microphone:
    1. Select the Start button in the bottom left corner, then click on Settings (small gear icon two up from the Start button)
    2. Choose Privacy, then Microphone
    3. Make sure it says "Microphone access for this device is on" towards the top. If it does not, select the "Change" button to turn it on
    4. Turn on "Allow apps to access your microphone"
    5. Change which apps have access to your microphone under "Choose which apps can access your microphone"

MacOS:

  • Make sure your application of choice has access to your microphone:
    1. Open System Preferences
    2. Select "Security & Privacy"
    3. Under the Privacy tab, choose Microphone on the left side
    4. Check the box next to the application you want to use the microphone with
