I need common engineering software installed on my engineering-owned computer
If you need access to software from our Software List, you can submit a Software Install Request form here: https://csu-ets.freshservice.com/support/catalog/items/3 . ETS can only install software on engineering-owned computers which have an ETS name (you can find this name on a paper sticker on the computer, it should be something like ETS00001 or ENS00001). ETS will need to verify that you are eligible to use the software, as not all software is available for any use. When you submit the software request form, it is usually helpful if you share who you are working with and why you need the software/what you plan to use it for (grad thesis work, grad research project, undergraduate research work, undergraduate thesis work, senior design project, etc). Depending on your eligiblity to use the software, an ETS team member will contact you with next steps (either to schedule an install, or to share information on obtaining a license for the software before we can install it for you).
I am eligible to use the software! What does the installation process look like?
My computer is on campus and connected to the campus Ethernet
Awesome! We'll just need you to tell us the name of the computer. You can find this on a paper sticker attached to the computer, it will say something like ETS00001 or ENS00001. You do not need to provide us with the installer for the software, as we already have the correct installer for the license you will be using. At the scheduled time of the install, you will need to log off, but leave the computer turned on and connected to the Ethernet. We'll remote in to the computer and complete the install for you. We'll try to let you know how long the install will take, and we'll let you know when we're finished.
My computer is off campus
Great! We'll need to schedule a TeamViewer appointment to install the software you are requesting. You do not need to provide us with the installer for the software, as we already have the correct installer for the license you will be using. At the time of your appointment, please connect to the Pulse Secure VPN, and start up TeamViewer, either by visiting https://get.teamviewer.com/csu-ets or by using the ETS TeamViewer Quick Support Module that you have saved from a previous interaction with ETS. Please send us the UserID and Password that are generated by responding to the Software Install request ticket you submitted earlier, and we'll join you to install the software you requested. You will need to remain logged in to your computer for the entire appointment, but we do request that you do not continue to work on other things during the appointment, as we will take control of your keyboard and mouse to install the software you requested.
My computer is in the Powerhouse, Anatomy/Zoology building, Factory, or other location that is not directly connected to the main campus.
Some locations on campus have Ethernet ports, but are on slightly different networks from the standard campus network. In this case, we'll normally follow the same procedure as above, "My computer is off campus". If we cannot install the software over TeamViewer, then we'll ask you to bring the computer into our office in Glover 100 to complete the install.
How long will the install take?
It depends on the software you need installed. Some software, such as Matlab, Ansys, SolidWorks, or LabView may take 45 minutes - 1 hour or longer, depending on your network speed (if your computer is on campus, it will usually take closer to 45 minutes to install). Other software, such as Adobe Reader or PuTTY will take 10-15 minutes. We'll try to let you know how long the install will take so that you can schedule a time that works best for you (you won't be able to use your computer during a software install, regardless of if your computer is on campus or off campus).
I am not eligible to use the software. Now what?
If you are not able to use the software you need (usually this is because the license for the software does not cover your use, such as research), ETS can still provide resources to you, such as bulk or education discounts on individual licenses, or limited-use licenses for some software. You can also reach out to RamTech to try and purchase a license for the software you need, but please check with ETS before purchasing anything from RamTech, as we may have a more suitable alternative for you. Once you have obtained the proper license for the software you need, ETS can help you install the software on an Engineering-owned computer.
I need uncommon software installed on my engineering-owned computer
If you need ETS to install a piece of software that we don't usually install, like a very specific module for a program, or any software that is not listed on our Software List, you will follow similar steps to those above, "I need common engineering software installed". However, you will need to provide ETS with the installer for the software you are using. Please download the installer you need, then place it in a folder on your Desktop titled "ETS". This will help us quickly identify and install the correct software you need installed. Please note, if you are not eligible to use the software, ETS will not install the software for you.
If you need access to "high maintenece software" (software that will need to be manually updated frequently, or software that requires administrative privileges to run), please submit a Permanent Administrative Request form: https://csu-ets.freshservice.com/support/catalog/items/43 . This will need to be approved by the faculty/researcher in charge of your project before we can give you permanent admin privileges.
I need access to software on my personally-owned computer
If you would like to use Matlab on your own computer, you can install it yourself following the instructions here: https://www.engr.colostate.edu/ets/matlab/
If you need to install Office365, please follow the instructions from ACNS here: https://www.acns.colostate.edu/software-downloads/
If you need Skype for Business, please follow the instructions on our website: https://www.engr.colostate.edu/ets/skype-for-business/
If you want software other than Matlab, Office365, or Skype for Business installed on your personally-owned computer, you will need to do this on your own. ETS cannot install software on personally-owned devices (we can only provide instructions for Matlab, Skype for Business, Office365, and Pulse Secure, and some general software installation knowledge/tips). With the exception of Matlab, engineering software such as Ansys, ArcGIS, SolidWorks, LabView, etc. cannot be installed on a personally owned device unless you purchase your own license to use the software.
However, almost all engineering software is available in ETS Lab spaces or on the Virtual Classroom, which you can access from a personally-owned computer at no cost: https://www.engr.colostate.edu/ets/virtual-classroom/ .
I need access to engineering software in a lab space (Magellan, Orion, or other ETS Lab spaces) or on the VCL
If you would like ETS to provide a particular piece of software to a lab space, please make sure to submit the Requesting Software for Labs request form: https://www.engr.colostate.edu/ens/info/software/requestsoftware.html during the "Call for Software" time frame (before each semester). Students should not usually request software in a lab space, this request should be made by a Faculty/Staff member who needs software to teach a class in a lab space.
